Merel Meijer grew up surrounded by the forests of the Veluwe, where stillness shaped her way of seeing. The quiet rhythm of falling leaves, the call of birds and the soft echo in hidden ponds taught her to observe slowly, to find balance in silence and to notice the smallest shifts in season and light.
Years later, living and working in Paris for one of the world’s leading luxury houses, she discovered a different rhythm, the deliberate pauses hidden in the rush of city life, the harmony of Haussmann façades, and the way light danced across stone and iron. In the Jardin du Luxembourg she found the same quiet wonder she knew from her childhood woods, just cast in a different form.
These two worlds, the silence of nature and the cadence of the city, continue to shape her work. Her paintings hold this tension: between stillness and movement, organic and structured, earth and architecture. They are built in layers, searching for balance, rooted in a deep appreciation for fleeting moments, like morning mist catching the first light of day, or the warmth of a pause in the middle of a restless street.
Merel creates in both her studios in Amsterdam and on the Veluwe exploring transformation and depth through abstraction. Her work is exhibited in galleries and spaces including Art Laren and Equals (Women in Art), and is collected internationally for its subtle strength and contemplative presence.
